Understanding IELTS Essay Types
In IELTS Writing Task 2, essays are built around clear opinions and logical structure. The three most common types you’ll face are: Agree/Disagree, Discuss Both Views, and Advantages/Disadvantages. Each requires a unique approach — but all need balance, coherence, and strong examples.
1. Agree or Disagree Essays
These essays ask you to give your opinion on a statement like:
"Technology has made our lives more complicated than easier. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"
- Decide whether you fully agree, fully disagree, or partially agree.
- Use clear topic sentences that reflect your stance.
- Support each paragraph with specific examples.
Tip: Don’t try to discuss both sides deeply — focus on proving your opinion clearly.
2. Discuss Both Views and Give Your Opinion
These essays test your ability to stay balanced and objective.
Example: "Some people think parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others believe school is the best place for this. Discuss both views and give your opinion."
- Paragraph 1 — explain the first view with reasons/examples.
- Paragraph 2 — explain the second view.
- Paragraph 3 — clearly state your own opinion and why.
Tip: Keep the tone neutral when explaining views — your opinion comes after both sides are discussed.
3. Advantages and Disadvantages Essays
You’ll need to show balance by explaining both sides clearly.
Example: "Many people work from home due to modern technology. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?"
- Intro — paraphrase question and outline both sides.
- Body 1 — describe advantages with examples.
- Body 2 — describe disadvantages with examples.
- Conclusion — summarize and give your final opinion (optional).
Tip: Stay objective — don’t sound biased unless the question asks for your opinion directly.
