IELTS Reading Question Types Overview
In this lesson, we’ll uncover the major question types you’ll face in IELTS Reading and how to handle each with clarity and confidence.
1. True / False / Not Given
This question checks your ability to identify if a statement agrees with the passage.
- True – if the statement matches the text exactly.
- False – if it contradicts the text.
- Not Given – if the text doesn’t mention it clearly.
Tip: Don’t assume or guess. If the text doesn’t say it, choose Not Given.
2. Matching Questions
These test your ability to connect information between paragraphs or ideas.
- Match headings to paragraphs.
- Match names or opinions to statements.
- Read all options before deciding. Remember, one keyword can make a difference.
🎯 Strategy: Skim first sentences of each paragraph. They often hold the main idea.
3. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
MCQs test your ability to identify the main idea or detail from several choices.
- Underline keywords in the question.
- Eliminate clearly wrong options first.
- Use scanning to find where the information appears in the text.
Focus on meaning, not just words. The passage may paraphrase the question.
